2 of 8 Boardworks Ltd 2015 Linear and cyclic patterns What is the difference between linear and cyclic patterns? Linear patterns involve different sections, as in binary (AB) and ternary (ABA) form. Western music tends to be linear. Cyclic patterns repeat and gradually change and develop. Music from Africa, Indonesia and India is often cyclic.

3 of 8 Boardworks Ltd 2015 African music Africa is made up of 53 different countries. Their landscapes, climates, languages and societies are varied, but their music shares some common features. These features include cyclic patterns, repetition, call-andresponse and polyrhythm.
