"The Raven"- Literary Devices

LITERARY DEVICES A R E V I E W O F L I T E R A RY TECHNIQUES AND DEVICES QUIZ YOURSELF With your table group, match the term cards to the definition cards that I handed out. See what you can remember about these literary devices and do your best!

LITERARY DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES Alliterationrepeating an initial sound several words in row Allusionreference to another text, an event, or place. Sometimes used for effect or to make a comparison. The reader then makes the connection. Irony- A statement whose hidden meaning is different from its surface meaning. Often implies meaning is the opposite of the stated meaning.

Word Choice (Diction)- the authors choice of language (look for words with strong connotations) LITERARY DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES Imagerydescriptions and descriptive words that provide a mental picture of a scene, setting, or character. May include other forms of figurative language for effect. Sense words are common. Metaphora comparison between unlike things that does

not use like or as. Similea comparison of unlike things, using like or as. Pun A play on words used for humor LITERARY DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES Onomatopoeia- words that mimic a sound Repetition- the repeating of a word or phrase for emphasis or effect Personification- Giving human qualities to objects or animals

Symbolism- when an object, person, or situation has a meaning other than its literal one. Motif- images, ideas, sounds, or words that help to explain the theme of a literary work. Reoccurring and are specifically tied to a texts central ideas. FIND EXAMPLES Now that you are clear on the definitions of each lit term, work with your group to find examples for each one.

You should be able to match two examples to each literary device. Some of these examples are tricky and seem to match with more than one term. Pick the best option!
