Author: God Writer: James (brother of Jesus) Time Period: ~45-50 A.D. Written To: Believing Jews scattered from Jerusalem because of persecution. Review of the Introduction to The Epistle of James James deals with one topic which he addresses through four evidences. 1. True Spirituality:
a. Faith in action. b. Self-Control. c. Unselfish, Generous, Impartial, Patient. d. Submits to God through Prayer. James teaches what True Spirituality means, and also teaches the mechanics needed in order to be Truly Spiritual. Review of pistewV pistewV faith
pistewV is a feminine noun which means, complete dependency, based on response. It identifies a relationship between two or more objects or persons in which one of the objects or persons is completely dependent upon the other for some thing or action. i.e.: Sitting in a chair. Review of swfoV swfoV wisdom The Koine Greek word used by James
which the English translators have translated as wisdom in verse 5 literally means, understanding how to apply knowledge to circumstance. Review: The Doctrine of Trials & Tribulations 1. When you encounter trials, enact Trial Protocol. 2. Once you have enacted Trial Protocol, utilize The Faith Action Principle to create the Faith Action Product (Spiritual Maturity).
3. If you find yourself lacking the understanding of how to use Bible Doctrine in your situation, enact Wisdom Deficit Disorder Protocol. 4. When you enact Wisdom Deficit Disorder Protocol, depend upon God to provide you what you have requested. Do not sort out data on your own. 5. Maintain your spiritual life so that you are operating from the Spirit Life Format in fellowship with God. Use confession of known sins (1 John 1:9) to restore fellowship and operation of the Spirit Life Format.
Review of Diagram 1 The Diagram of Trial & Tribulation Protocol* appears this way: Trial Protocol (enables) The Faith Action Principle (which produces) Faith Action Product (Spiritual Growth) *(summary of Trial Protocol, the Faith Action
Principle, and the Faith Action Product) Review of Verse 2 2. Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, The phrase, consider it all joy means to maintain an attitude of joy which governs your thought process. Believers who come upon a trial during their time on earth are commanded to possess this attitude of joy which is to govern their thought process
during the trial. Review of Verse 3 3. Knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. James gives the reason why the believer can be joyful during trials. The word produces identifies that endurance works its way from inside the believer to the outside when the believer rests in complete dependency (faith).
Review of Verse 4 4. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. The result of the believers complete dependency is the ability to remain in a state of rest underneath various trials. That ability then provides the believer with the foundation for experiential spiritual growth.
Review of Verse 5 5. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James then commands the believer who lacks an understanding of how to apply knowledge to his circumstance to make a formal request for wisdom from God. The believer is commanded to ask God, not humanity for this
wisdom. Review of Verse 6 6. But he must ask in faith, without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. The phrase, without any doubting refers to someone who is not evaluating data and attempting to make judgment based upon the data collected.
Review of Verse 7 7. For that man should not expect to receive anything from the Lord The one who evaluates data and attempts to make judgments based upon it is compared to the surf of the sea, being controlled by external forces. This is the man whom James calls double minded.
Review of Verse 8 8. Being a double minded man, unstable in all his ways. The double minded man is a reference to a trichotomous human who is attempting to use his Soul Life Format to interpret things which are designed to be interpreted through his Spirit Life Format. Review: The Anatomy of Humanity According to Scripture
The Doctrine of the Trichotomy of Humanity: Humanity is comprised of three parts which are the physical body, the soul life format, and the spirit life format. Anatomy of Humanity: 1. Physical Body 2. Soul Life Format 3. Spirit Life Format This is at least, how humanity was created originally by God.
Review : The Anatomy of Humanity According to Scripture The phrase, you will surely die (Genesis 2:17) identifies two types of death: 1. Instantaneous Death. 2. Future Death. The tense use of the original Hebrew phrase dying you will die indicates an immediate, instant death, which precedes a future death.
Review: The Anatomy of Humanity According to Scripture As a result of the fall of humanity there was instantaneous death of the Spirit Life Format in Adam and Eve and the genetic makeup of humanity became dichotomous (made of two parts): Dichotomous Humanity: 1. Physical Body 2. Soul Life Format
3. Spirit Life Format Man is then in need of the rebirthing of the Spirit Life Format (cf. John 3:5-6). Review: Human Viewpoint vs. Divine Viewpoint Human Viewpoint (Sight-based): A process of thought or manner of thinking which is based on data perceived and developed by the human senses within the realms of this human world system.
Divine Viewpoint (Faith-based): A process of thought or manner of thinking which is based upon dependence upon Spiritual Truth Doctrines of Gods World System. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) Verse 9: But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; James begins verse 9 with the phrase,
brother of humble circumstances. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) de o adelfoV o tapeinoV but the brother of humble circumstance adelfoV ((pronounced, ah-del-fos) is a masculine noun which means brother. Because it is masculine, it identifies the believer is a brother based on initiation.
Gender in Koine Greek Koine Greek uses gender to identify relationship correlations over biological construction. 3 Gender Types: 1. Masculine gender based upon initiation 2. Neuter gender a tool or instrument 3. Feminine gender based upon response adelfoV (is in the Masculine Gender which identifies it as being based on initiation. This means that being a brother or sister in Christ is based upon initiation.
Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) ( ( (de ( ( (o ( ( (adelfoV ( ( (o tapeinoV but the brother of humble circumstances o (tapeinoV ((pronounced, hah tah-pei-nos) is an adjectival phrase which describes the brother as being of lowly position.
This is a reference to a believer who is of a lower social status because of his lack of possessing an abundance of physical resources. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) kaucasqw en autou tw uyei glory in his high position James commands the believer of lowly social status to glory in his high position. Kaucasqw (pronounced, kau-kahs-tho) is a present tense middle passive imperative
verb meaning to take pride in something. Tense in Koine Greek Tense is used to identify the type of action in Koine Greek more so than the time of action. There are many tenses and combinations of tenses. Simply described, the present tense identifies a continuous type of action. An action which starts and then keeps going with no reference made to when it finishes
kaucasqw (is a present tense verb which means, continually take pride in something (his high position). Voice in Koine Greek Voice is used in Koine Greek to express how the subject operates in relationship to the verb. There are three types of voice in Koine Greek: 1. Active Voice the subject performs the action. 2. Middle Voice the subject participates in the action. 3. Passive Voice the subject is acted upon by the action.
kaucasqw is in the Middle Passive Voice. This identifies the subject as participating in the action of being acted upon to take pride in his high position. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) kaucasqw take pride in something The Middle Passive voice identifies a relationship between the subject (the lowly believer) and his
ability to take pride in his high position. When the lowly believer depends upon God rather than physical resources, he is able to take pride in his spiritual position which is quite higher than any human social position. Not only is he able, but he is commanded to do so. Mood in Koine Greek Mood is used in Koine Greek to establish the atmosphere of an action or state of being. There are four types of mood in Koine Greek:
1. 2. 3. 4. Indicative Mood- identifies reality Optative Mood- identifies desire Imperative Mood- identifies command Subjunctive Mood- identifies possibility kaucasqw is in the Imperative Mood.
This identifies it as being a command. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) kaucasqw en autou tw uyei glory in his high position What is that something the believer is commanded to continually participate in the action of being acted upon to take pride in? It is en (autou (tw (uyei ((pronounced, ehn autoo toh hoops-ei). Literally translated, in of
him the position of high status. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) en autou twuyei in his high position The Greek preposition en (pronounced, ehn) identifies the location in which the lowly believer is to take pride. The genitive pronoun autou (pronounced, au-too) is substituted for the lowly believer and means of him. The genitive case is used here to identify
possession. What is the object which is possessed and who is doing the possessing? Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) en autou twuyei in his high position What is the object which is possessed and who is doing the possessing? tw (uyei ((pronounced, toh oops-ei) is the object which is possessed, it means position of high status. The lowly
believer is the one possessing the position of high status. It is his. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) Therefore, the lowly believer who lacks physical resources to combat trials and tribulation, yet depends upon God is commanded to take pride in the high position which is his through dependence upon God.
Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) Trials and tribulation do not discriminate. They affect the poor and the rich. However, God does not favor the rich over the poor or the poor over the rich. All believers (whether rich or poor) are commanded to implement Trial & Tribulation Protocol for the production of spiritual growth. Physical resources do not acquire spiritual growth. Complete dependency upon Gods Word within his relationship to God allows the believer to be lifted
up by God to a position of high spiritual status. Trials & Tribulation (Part 8) James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. Remove any self dependenable resources which are solely yours, financial, relational, academic, etc. Depend upon Bible Doctrine within your relationship with God and you will be grown spiritually, experientially progressing
towards the ultimate sanctification which awaits those in Christ after this age.
