A young man comes to Scetis, west of the Nile, to seek out the great monk Abba Macarius. He asks Abba Macarius, "How do I get to be a holy man? I want to be a holy man. And I want to be one tomorrow." Macarius smiles and says, "Spend the day tomorrow over at the cemetery. I want you to abuse the dead for all you're worth. Throw sticks and stones at them, curse at them, call them namesanything you can think of. Spend the whole day doing nothing but that." The young man must have thought the great monk was crazy, but he spent the next day doing everything he was told. When he returned, Abba Macarius asked him, "What did the dead people say out there today?" The young man responded that they didn't say a thing. They were dead. Macarius said, "Isn't that interesting? I want you to go back tomorrow, and this time spend the day saying everything nice about these people. Call them righteous men and women, compliment them,

say everything wonderful you can imagine." Hoe word ek heilig? (verv) So the young man went back the next day, did as he was told, and returned to Macarius. The monk asked him what the dead people said this time. "Well, they didn't answer a word again," replied the brother. "Ah, they must indeed be holy people," said Macarius. "You insulted them, and they did not reply. You praised them, and they did not speak. Go and do likewise, my friend, taking no account of either the scorn of men and women or their praises. And you too will be a holy man." It's a wonderful story that asks two questions: What do you ignore? The answer is the scorn and praise of others. The other question is more indirectWhat do you love? That is, since you are not going to be motivated by what others

think, what are you going to give yourself to fully?

(Is bewus van eie invloed as leiers hetsy negatief of positief; verstaan wat predikant as leiers se sentrale funksies is

2 3 Sessie 3 predikantsbediening - rolle en take Ministry the difference between roles and tasks It is important to distinguish between the roles and tasks of ministry By tasks we mean the usual pastoral functions we do like preaching, leading worship, saying prayers, teaching, pastoral care, leading small groups, administration, etc (problem: maceration of ministry) By roles we mean the basic and vital intentions behind our

ministry. We can say that roles has to do with the why and what questions of ministry and the tasks more with the what and how questions. We will be focussing more on the roles of ministry because we believe that a deep understanding and identification with the roles are even more foundational for our ministry than an effective and smooth fulfilment of the tasks.

Protestant training in 60s: Different tasks! Preaching Visitation, Pastoral Care and Counselling Teaching, Training, Cathechesis (and Youth Ministry) Liturgy (leading worship) Diakonia (Compassion Ministry) Administration, leadership at meetings, finances, etc 2 7 Rolle: meer wesenlik as take!

Helpful distinction: prophet, priest, servant leader, and disciple (cf Wainwright) Prophet: focus on God (speak on Gods behalf, tell the Christian Story) Priest: focus on people, loving people, trying to inspire them Servant Leader: focus on Congregation helping it to be more missional and make a difference Disciple: Focus on own life with God and calling, living with faith, hope and love 2 9 Bediening

pastoral theology (prophets who point to an alternative future) Pauls pastoral theology challenges the contemporary focus on the individual and emphasizes community formation (pastoral leaders who can tap the energies of Christian communal life) Ministry will no longer retreat from ethical direction but will offer guidance resulting in ethical transformation (priests who can help people to discipleship, transformation and just living) 3 6 Bucer oor die predikant vanuit Eseg 34:16

4 0 Sessie 4 Predikante as profete Wat doen profete?

Clear about the difference between the God of Jesus (Trinity) and deism, theism and pan(en)theism (Morse: Christian unbelief! The Gods we do not believe in) The word as informative and transformative (2 Cor 3:18) The transformative word as Zuspruch (gift), Gegenspruch (mirror) and as Anspruch (claim): Gospel, Law, Imperative 4 3 Being a prophet: practice Attention to your own calling, faith and spiritual energy Given the honor to reveal the secrets of God (Eph 3)! Find your own voice (own style and way of communicating: eg. are you a talker, speaker or orator?) Most important discipline: reading and reflecting on

Bible. Consider following the Lectionary Realize that size of group influences communication style Liturgy can help to make worship/preaching a joyous occasion Find opportunities in week to talk casually about the texts you are working on. 44 Profete wat naby aan God leef en herinner aan sy hoopvolle beloftes

Sessie 5 predikante as priesters en dienende leiers What does priests do? They love and serve people with the love of Christ Old Testament

Moses, also a priest, intercedes for the people (pray) Appointed Priests officiate at temple organize liturgy and worship Mosess priestly attitude willing to die for his people (also Hosea) New Testament Jesus our High Priest: atone for our sins; forgive, care, heal, intercede with God; ministry of peace and reconciliation No Priests in NT! Only pastors and shepherds build caring community Individual conversations of Jesus and Paul (spiritual care) Stronger emphasis on what is offered through Jesus: forgiveness, renewal, healing, reconciliation, care, peace, growth, development, freedom.

48 Being a caring priest: practice Who see people, attend to them, think about them and take them seriously as children of God Who look at people through the eyes of Jesus and see their potential and gifts (encourage) Who love people with the love coming from Christ and the heart of God (a positive, affirmative attitude) Being present with people And see and understand their pain Who are able to help people grow (courses, groups) Help people fo internalize Gods gifts and to be formed and transformed Help people to make connections and build relationships

What do leaders do? 52 Old Testament Classical Examples: Patriarchs and Moses: called to acts as a servant and leaders of Gods people. Had this double character from beginning

Opting for Kings against Gods will: want to be like other people, Leadership has to do with strategies and plans and organizing - to get things done (dg Moses in Ex 18) Leadership often divided between differing offices and persons New Testament: Jesus do hand over a kind of leadership to the disciples/apostles; question whether there was a special kind of leadership in the group. Again see the prominence of team leadership Formation of congregations: election of local leaders also women Also groups of offices: Ephesians, Pastorals, do not use word for leader Paul: special place? Kind of bishop? So: Leadership is not about power and control but about taking responsibility to get things done. Calvin; Brueggemann. Being a worthy leader: practice

53 Leaders must understand he importance of congregations in the economy of God Congregational Leaders should also be Social visionaries and be willing to act as civil leaders. They are builders - not only building the congregation but also building a good, caring community. Having a kingdom vision on the community (Calvin) Understand the potential and dynamics of congregations (personal, social, theological) Be willing to take the responsibility of leadership and having the competence to build koinonia (a team!) Dreams must be converted into specific goals, strategies and plans Help the congregation to discern its calling and help individuals to discover their gifts and vocations And empower (inspire and mobilize) them to take up their vocations Seeing opening for ministry (both in the congregation and in the community)

Learn from the social sciences but also see the patterns in the work of the Spirit Dienende Gemeenteleiers Wat glo dat drome moet oorgesit kan en moet word in haalbare planne en strategie Wat dink oor die gemeente en sy prosesse en kennis daaroor probeer insamel Kennis uit sosiale wetenskappe, maar veral oor Gees en sy unieke logika Wat probeer leer hoe ons mense bemagtig en mobiliseer vir hulle dienswerk (ook ontdek en uitleef van hul roepings) Term? Eerder leier, begeleier, bestuurder, administrateur Vir refleksie

Competencies - Schroder Thinking competencies Learning competencies Inspirational Competencies Action Competencies 5 7 Leadership: a vital part of ministry!

Important role of Leaders in OT and NT (part of almost all the stories) Pattern in Scripture(eg Ex 2-3) Confirmed by Experience Overduin: Zoo prediker, zoo gemeente Ammermann navorsing: Storie oor Churchill en 2WO 5 8 But! The other side of the story Total absence of the term leadership in NT! Reasons? Temptations.. Importance of unselfishness, ability to focus on others

(secular research confirms this) Four qualifications: Not lead or rule but serve! NT term is ministry Emphasis on weakness and dependence (vs worldly images of strength and competency) Primary ministry is not the ministry of the pastor but the ministry of Christ and the ministry of the Congregation! Obedience more important than success 5 9 Osmer drie vlakke van leierskap

You will find your way only by getting lost You will gain power by empowering others The less you are attached to the congregation the deeper your relationships 6 0 Final check points and

reminders All three roles should potentially be operative in all of our ministry (all tasks) Always be on the lookout for (unexpected) openings for ministry Always be mindful of both penultimate and ultimate goals of ministry Think about practising the role in the congregation but also outside the congregation Luckily leadership is to be done in a team. Building community Exploring discipleship Church taking shape Do it again 7 1 Your understanding of a missional church 7 2 GOCNs list of twelve characteristics of missional churches

1. The missional church proclaims the gospel. 2. The missional church is a community where all members are involved in learning to become disciples of Jesus. 3. The Bible is normative in this church's life. 4. The church understands itself as different from the world because of its participation in the life, death, and resurrection of its Lord. 5. The church seeks to discern God's specific missional vocation for the entire community and for all of its members. 6. A missional community is indicated by how Christians behave toward one another. 7. It is a community that practices reconciliation. 8. People within the community hold themselves accountable to one another in love. 9. The church practices hospitality. 10.Worship is the central act by which the community celebrates with joy and thanksgiving both God's presence and God's promised future.

11.This community has a vital public witness. 12.There is a recognition that the church itself is an incomplete expression of the reign of God. 7 3 Changing the focus Ray Anderson Emerging theology for emerging churches

It is about theology and not geography Its about Christ and not Christology Its about Spirit and not just Spirituality Its about the right Gospel, not just the right polity Its about kingdom living and not kingdom building Its about the work of God and not just the word of God Its about the law of love and not the letter of the law Its about the community of the Spirit, not just the gifts of the Spirit Its about mission and not just ministry Its about the church ahead of us and not just the church behind us

7 4 Urgent issues for congregations Identity: it is about the Gospel and the God of Jesus Christ Mission: what are we now called to do here in line with Micah 6? Ministry: How are we going to do it? Understanding and living the Gospel (regaining preaching and teaching ministries) With worship and sacraments in the center Learning to live with hope and faith so that we may be able to love (attention to formation)

Helping congregants to discover their ministries 7 5 Six disruptive missional practices Dwelling in the Word Dwelling in the World

Announcing the Kingdom Hospitality Spiritual discernment Focus on Missional Action 7 6 Dwelling in the Word We want the Word to shape our imaginations, intentions, and actions. So we dwell in the Word in pairs and in groups whenever we meet in order to be shaped by God's Word as heard through one another.

Dwelling in the World We want to be alert and observant of the people of peace in the world where God has sent us. So we interact in our wider communities, looking for the people of peace God sends us each week, in order to join community where God is already at work. Announcing the Kingdom of God We want to be Jesus' witnesses, seeing Jesus at work and bearing witness to his presence in the world. So we practice noticing Jesus at work in the world and tell stories about it so that when we see

the Kingdom of God near us, we can point it out to others. Hospitality We want to create safe space for forming Christian community. So we practice receiving the gracious welcome of people of peace, and we practice giving a gracious welcome to people of peace in order to build bridges within God's mission In and for the world. Spiritual Discernment We want to recognize how we've come to where we are and who the Holy Spirit is calling us to be within God's mission. So

we dwell in the Word and brainstorm together our past and our present, in order to listen through one another for the Spirit directing us toward God's preferred and promised future for us. Focus for Missional Action We want to use our time and energy well, not wasting it on too many good things. So we commit to memory our specific missional vocation and use it as a standard in our congregational life together, moving us further into God's mission in the world. Bedieningsmodelle? Opsies

8 Hoe word ek heilig? A young man comes to Scetis, west of the Nile, to seek out the great monk Abba Macarius. He asks Abba Macarius, "How do I get to be a holy man? I want to be a holy man. And I want to be one tomorrow." Macarius smiles and says, "Spend the day tomorrow over at the cemetery. I want you to abuse the dead for all you're worth. Throw sticks and stones at them, curse at them, call them names anything you can think of. Spend the whole day doing nothing but that." The young man must have thought the great monk was crazy, but he spent the next day doing everything he was told. When he returned, Abba Macarius asked him, "What did the dead people say out there today?"

The young man responded that they didn't say a thing. They were dead. Macarius said, "Isn't that interesting? I want you to go back tomorrow, and this time spend the day saying everything nice about these people. Call them righteous men and women, compliment them, say everything wonderful you can imagine." Hoe word ek heilig? (verv) So the young man went back the next day, did as he was told, and returned to Macarius. The monk asked him what the dead people said this time. "Well, they didn't answer a word again," replied the brother. "Ah, they must indeed be holy people," said Macarius. "You insulted them, and they did not reply. You praised them, and they did not speak. Go and do likewise, my friend, taking no account of either the scorn of men and

women or their praises. And you too will be a holy man." It's a wonderful story that asks two questions: What do you ignore? The answer is the scorn and praise of others. The other question is more indirectWhat do you love? That is, since you are not going to be motivated by what others think, what are you going to give yourself to fully? Sentrale vrae Wat kom natuurliker by jou: profeet, priester, koning (bestuur, organiseer) funksies?

McElvaney: People of God Ministry Formation: Three Circles Knowing: Theology Doing: Practice of Ministry Being: Spiritual Disciplines Nouwen: Creative Ministry

Dalk was daar negatiewe rolmodelle?

Daarom was `n diep verstaan

He formed a community Newbigin: the congregation as the first hermeneutic of the
