Were you fluent and expressive, or did you read word by word? Did you have to pause and sound out words letter by

letter? Do you understand what you have read? Could you re-tell or answer questions about the text? If children read like this it is very hard for them to understand the meaning, They may be able to read the words in books but reading is much more than just saying the words. A closer look at reading Involves applying phonic knowledge to words which can be sounded out and sight reading

tricky words. Not just about reading the words, but making sense of the text and talking about what they have read. Reading takes time and is based on children building up a wide range of vocabulary. Childrens reading has a strong correlation to writing. The Early Stages of Reading Development

Exploring books with other people Enjoys rhyme and continue a rhyming string Handling books and print with interest Have favourite stories Discuss the main events and characters in a story Repeat phrases from the book or fill in missing words Handles books carefully, holds the book the correct way up and turns pages Recognises family words such as their name or advertising logos Hears and says initial sounds in words

Segment the sounds in words and blend them together Recognises some words by sight Begin to read words and simple sentences EYFS Early Learning Goal Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

KS1 Reading Content Domains In KS1, during Year 1 and Year 2, your children will be assessed on the 5 aspects of reading mentioned below. These are known as Reading Domains. a) draw on knowledge of vocabulary to understand texts b) identify / explain key aspects of fiction and nonfiction texts, such as characters, events, titles

and information c) identify and explain the sequence of events in texts d) make inferences from the text e) predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far What is phonics? Used for teaching reading and writing. It teaches your children the 42 different letter

sounds. Sessions take place daily and are pacey and interactive, to maintain childrens attention. Children are streamed into phonics groups across their year group. of year 1 Phonics screening. Alien word and real words. Assess children's knowledge of the taught phonemes and their ability to segment and blend sounds. Guided reading Every week your child will be read with by an adult in a guided reading group. The teacher will focus on one objective throughout the session e.g. Can you retell

a familiar fairy tale? The children who are not reading with an adult will complete a carousel of activities throughout the week. This will include a spelling, writing and reading activity. Benchmarking Childrens reading will be assessed using the PM Benchmark assessment kit. Children will read a book, retell the story and answer questions on it.

This will give us information on your childs reading accuracy and comprehension skills. Your child will only be moved up to the next level after they successfully complete a benchmark. When your child is benchmarked we will write a note in their journal. When Benchmarking, we are looking for the childs INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL. A child is reading BLUE books at home. At school, they are reading GREEN instructionally in Guided

Reading Sessions. Your child will be benchmarked at least once a term but more should the teacher feel that they are ready to be moved on from assessments throughout class reading sessions. If you feel that your child may be ready to be assessed, please let us know. If your child doesnt move on a book band, we will explain to you what it was in our assessment that was tricky so that you can continue working on this at home. End of year expectations ARE

YR ELG ARE Year 1 ARE Year 2 By the end of reception, we expect children to be reading securely at YELLOW level. This requires children to be good sight readers of high frequency words. By the end of year one, to reach age related goals, children

should achieve ORANGE or TURQUOISE LEVEL. By Year 2, a child working at the expected standard for the end of KS1 will typically be reading WHITE level texts. End of year expectations Reception End of year expectations Year 1 End of year expectations Year 2

Expectations of parents Read with your child every day. Write in reading records to tell us how your child is getting on with their reading at home we dont need in depth comments every night but we do need to know as and when a word has been too tricky, their fluency is improving, they were a little tired, or super enthusiastic. CHILDREN WILL CHANGE THEIR COLOURED STICKER BOOKS EVERYDAY SO PLEASE, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, READ EVERYDAY!!!! It really does make a difference. Please ask questions after your child has finished reading to build their comprehension and understanding

of the text. Reading tips! o Have patience! o Keep it short and regular. o Talk about the book before starting - look through the pages so that your child knows what to expect especially the vocabulary. You could look for any tricky words first. o Give them the word or say the sounds to help them dont leave them struggling for a long time. o If they are too tired, read to them without expecting them

to join in - just tracking along the text, as you read, is helping them. o Dont ever cover the pictures using the pictures is actually a really important stage of reading development/ o Encourage reading everywhere out in TESCO, signs in the park etc o Pre-reading telling their own story using book pictures Reading questions Helpful websites Bug

Statutory Reading Assessment In KS1 at the end of Year 2, children complete a National Curriculum Reading Test (SATs) The results are reported to parents and the school results are monitored against national and local schools. They are supposed to be a marker to show progress in key stage 1(compared to end of EYFS) and then again at the end of key stage 2.

The assessment your child achieves in Year 2 (KS1) is used to support target setting for the end of KS2. Lets put you to the test On your tables, you will find a past paper for the Y2 SATs that children will sit in the summer term of Y2. Dont be surprised if you dont know when exactly your child will sit this paper We keep it very low key We say that we are doing a fun reading booklet Your children feel grown up about the task they are doing but

they dont see it as a test. Unlike KS2 SATs papers, there is not a set timetable for a specific date and amount of time that should be give to children completing this. Children will generally complete at some point over June. So, all thats left to ask is Are you smarter than a 7 year old?
