ICT Necessities for ACU Education Students

ICT Necessities for ACU Education Students 2008 Teaching Development Grant Donna Gronn (FED) Adam Staples (FED) Laurine Hurley (FAS) project aims To create an online unit for use by all new Faculty of Education students, with the possibility of extending to other first year students at ACU after initial implementation. To specifically address the issue of students knowledge and skills with ICT, focussing on facilities and programs they will need to ensure their efficient progress through, and successful completion of, their course at ACU. In accordance with the university generic skill that

refers to independent learning, this unit will be set up for students to complete independently. It will be recommended that students who enrol in Faculty of Education courses complete this special unit. intended student learning outcomes Successful familiarisation with the navigation and use of the WebCT learning management system. Familiarity with the ACU computing facilities Familiarity with the use of generic programs used within the course. At this stage the focus will be on Internet Explorer, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Inspiration. A confidence in their ability to use available technologies to assist them with their studies

and in their future teaching careers. content The use and explanation of ACU computing facilities Specific tasks using MS Word, MW Excel, MS PowerPoint, Inspiration and other software seen as relevant to staff at the time. Use of a quiz that students must complete to show they have achieved the outcomes of this special unit. A student survey to gauge the success of the site and to gain feedback from students for the constant improvement of the special unit. significance to education

Beginning teachers in Australian schools are expected to have a high level of competency and experience in a range of ICT programs integrated with classroom activities That the range of ICT knowledge and skills of students now attending ACU to study in the Faculty of Education is broader than it has ever been significance to students This unit would assist the students who are confident with technology in that it will confirm for them that they have the necessary skills to complete the course. For those students unfamiliar with technology this unit will enable them to spend as much time as

they need, particularly due to the online nature of the unit and the non restrictive timeframe for the unit, to become familiar with something they have so far not had experience with. It will also equip them with the skills to complete their course more efficiently. significance to staff Who frequently struggle with the students who have no technological skills and require extra assistance of a kind staff do not expect to have to give in this technological age. There is a need to ensure that students have the required skills and confidence with ICT that is expected of any tertiary student today.

gauging success A student quiz will be part of the special unit to gauge student achievement. A student survey will be part of the special unit. This will allow us to gain feedback from student so the value of the unit. A focus group of students towards the end of their first semester will be asked for more extensive feedback on the unit and its contribution to their first year experience. A staff survey of staff teaching first year students involved will be completed to gauge the value of the skill improvement in students and if the skills they have acquired are transferable to the work they are expected to complete in units throughout the course. data

927 students were given access. 251 accessed the unit for a total of 444 sessions and 23 hours 42 minutes and 42 seconds. (Included having a quick look, and logged on not working) 30 students accessed the site for between 10 minutes and 5 hours 35 minutes. course item usage (whole group percentage of file visits) course item usage (whole group percentage of visits) Item Introduction

4 4 When did you complete this unit? Mid semester holidays, during the day 1st week At various intervals in Semester 2 What items were most useful to you? Information about word All items :)

Inspiration Needs: Needs more information on databases Did the layout of the project suit your learning needs? It was a bit plain so more colour was needed but the page dumps were fantastic Yes, the sequence was good because it was gradual and covered everything that was important Yes it did suit my learning needs. Did the sequence of the items

assist your learning? The layout was easy and simple to understand with useful topics and items. Yes, easy to navigate Yes, started with basics & worked up Why didnt you use it? Not informed I didnt really know that it was available Because I did not know what it was Why didnt you use it? Time Never took the time to look at it because I was busy.

No free time to experiment and try it out. Honestly I did not have enough time during the semester to complete it Why didnt you use it? No need I have a general understanding of how to use the computer and most programs. I have extensive understanding of ICT. I looked at the site and found there was nothing in it which would benefit me. I didnt find it very necessary. If we cant use the programs by now there is something wrong. I usually just have a bit of trial and error if I do come

across something I dont know, otherwise Id ask a friend. Also feel that my computer abilities are at a level that satisfies my needs for university and for general computer needs. I just never needed its help. Didnt feel the need to. Focus Groups Sadly although letter, emails were sent to key users of the site none were available for focus groups. Understandably, teachers of first years found no particular difference across the board.

The students who used the site benefited from it The site was not used by enough students Why Time Not enough exposure No need
