RESEARCHOBJECTIVES Identify a research question thatcould be answered with DNA

IDENTIFY ARESEARCHQUESTION THATCOULD BEANSWEREDWITH DNA Y-DNA : Determining apaternal line mt-DNA: Determining amaternal line Autosomal DNA: Proving anancestor within 7-8generations X-DNA: Narrowing downcousin matches

CREATE ANOBJECTIVE TOGUIDE THERESEARCH Use key identifiers such ascomplete names, dates andplaces Prove a hypothesizedidentity or biologicalrelationship

CASE STUDY: OBJECTIVE Example: Identify the biologicalfather of Jack Kenneth (Green)Shaffer. Jack was born 10 July1926 in Oklahoma City,Oklahoma, Oklahoma, and diedJune 2012 in Norman, Cleveland,Oklahoma. Jack marriedMarjorie McCormick on 31March 1945 in Fort Sill,Comanche, Oklahoma.

ANALYZE YOUR SOURCES Gather all documentary sourcestogether into a timeline toanalyze

Original, derivative, orauthored sourceEVIDENCE ANALYSISPrimary, secondary, orundetermined information

Original sources: DNAresultsDNA SOURCEANALYSISAuthored sources:family trees of yourDNA matches

Primary Information: theamount of DNA shared with aperson in a match listDNA SOURCEANALYSISAnalyze the centimorgans andpossible relationships for eachmatch for viability

DNA SOURCEANALYSIS View the family trees of thematches and analyze theiraccuracy

DNA SOURCE ANALYSISIs there enough shared DNA toanswer the research question orwill there be a need for more DNAtesting?
